Ruth Slater joined SmellTaste in July 2026 as a Research Development and Engagement Manager. A new role that was made possible by an NIHR grant designed to identify ways to provide better care to people with smell and taste disorders. She supports the development of SmellTaste’s research strategy, patient and public involvement and engagement, and collaboration with academic, clinical and charity partners.

Ruth has more than two decades’ experience in health and science research and communications, with a strong focus on patient engagement, evidence translation, research communication and partnership development. Her career spans healthcare communications, real-world evidence, NHS service improvement, patient support and charity partnerships, across a range of health areas including oncology, neurology and rare or under-recognised conditions.

At SmellTaste, Ruth is helping to strengthen how people affected by smell and taste disorders are involved in research, and how their insight can inform future research priorities, partnerships and funding opportunities.
